Work Integrated Learning Project
A select group of Juris Doctor (JD) students from Monash University successfully completed a work project and presented their findings to Guided Resolution’s CEO. The group explored how Online Dispute Resolution could be best implemented within major Tribunals.
Since January 2016, every Monash University law student undertaking the compulsory Litigation and Dispute Resolution units in undergraduate (LLB) and postgraduate (JD) programs has had a direct experience of Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) using Guided Resolution’s portal.
Dr Genevieve Grant today reported that students were overwhelmingly positive about the system and concluded that ODR has an important place in mainstream legal education. Students described the portal as ‘an effective tool’, with ‘very instructive’ explanatory videos and an impressively intuitive design.
Ross Paull was a keynote speaker on this topic at the 2017 Law Conference hosted by Deakin Law School, Centre on the Legal Profession.
The annual Australasian Law Awards celebrates excellence in the legal profession. We are pleased to announce that Steve Lancken, one of our Advisory Board members, received the award of Resolution Institute Mediator of the Year.
In celebration of Westpac's 200th anniversary, the bank has compiled a list of 200 Australian businesses, which it predicts will unlock Australia's 'economic potential'. The 200 acknowledged businesses gathered at a summit in Sydney where they networked and collaborated alongside Australian business icons.
Guided Resolution was selected as one of Westpac’s inaugural 200 Businesses of Tomorrow (BoT). The Westpac program recognises and supports great Australian businesses today, with a clear vision for tomorrow. The 200 BoTs were chosen on their potential to shape Australia’s future. Each selected business demonstrated the following qualities:
- A track record of delivery
- Clarity of purpose and vision
- Outstanding value to customers
- Capability to meet tomorrow’s challenges
- Adaptability and resilience
- Contribute beyond the business to the community, industry or the economy
Guided Resolution was selected from more than 2,000 nominees, independently assessed by Deloitte and chosen by a high profile judging panel.
Ross Paull spoke on this topic at the 2017 ACCAL Conference, a conference organised by the Australian College of Community Association Lawyers on 15-17 March 2017.
The presentation focused on ODR tools, how they are delivered and how they can be applied to strata related disputes.
Ross Paull and Nitzan Karni gave a talk at the New South Wales Bar Association. The talk specifically addressed Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) including its challenges and potential benefits. It focused on the types of ODR that could augment existing dispute resolution protocols across a variety of industries and contexts.
The key theme is that ODR seeks to harness technology as the metaphorical “Fourth Party” (in other words, a distinct participant) in non-adversarial processes, facilitating control and economy for users through its early structured engagement.
The main sections of the talk were:
- ODR models
- Problems
- Challenges
- Asynchronous experiential frameworks
- Leveraging non-adversarial elements
- Potential benefits
- Communication advantages
- Conclusion
Conclusions
ODR is best suited to jurisdictions lower down the food chain of law and justice – such as Tribunals and Ombudsman Services – where speedier and inexpensive outcomes are desirable.

Guided Resolution has successfully piloted a prototype version of its Online Dispute Resolution (ODR) system with the NSW Civil & Administrative Tribunal (NCAT), one of Australia’s largest tribunals. The pilot ran for three months and targeted consumer claims lodged online in the Consumer and Commercial Division for amounts less than $5,000. The outcomes from several hundred live cases were compared against a control group for the corresponding period prior to the pilot.
“Our beta version outperformed the control group by a pleasing margin and the survey feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive with the majority agreeing that the system was convenient and they were satisfied with the service even if the agreement was not what they were expecting and they would use the ODR system again”. – Ross Paull, CEO Guided Resolution
